Rationale for Study

Get Out by Jordan Peele is a film that is excellent for study for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Race relations and White supremacy: The film is a satire that examines contemporary race relations and White supremacy, and how they can manifest in a high-tech scientific age.

  • Post-racial liberalism: The film addresses the issue of "post-racial" liberalism in America.

  • Microaggressions: The film demonstrates how liberal ideology and colour-blind rhetoric can be perceived as a perpetuation of microaggressions.

  • Systemic racism: The film uses symbolism to create meaning that links to the ideology of race, and foreshadows the audience to the theme of systemic racism.

  • Narrative structure: The film's narrative structure includes a Dark Night of the Soul, where the character is forced to reflect on their predicament.

  • Anxiety: The film expresses anxiety through examination and body movement.

  • Horror film: The film casts the story of racism as a horror film, showing how racist behaviour that tries to be aggressively pacifist is just as horrifying.
